Key Features

Guided Instruction
Each Thinking Blocks program contains six guided practice sets. Proper modeling techniques are practiced for specific types of word problems. The practice sets increase in difficulty and build upon concepts previously learned.

Application of Acquired Knowledge
The independent practice section gives students the opportunity to apply what they've learned. Students must first classify the word problem, then draw a model that reflects the given information. Performance is assessed in this section and students receive feedback and a final score.

Engaging Interaction
Movable blocks and student produced responses actively involve students in the problem solving process. Feedback for incorrect answers includes hints that help students get back on track.

Randomized Problem Sets

Dallas County Schools has an awesome website that has compiled released 2003, 2004, and 2006 TAKS Tests with a breakdown of why students chose the wrong answer. It includes Reading, Math, and Science grades 3-10. The pdfs are large, so my suggestion would be to save your grade level test to a flashdrive on CD. Let me know if this link helped you.

No matter what grade you are in, check out each Math chart, starting with 3rd grade. As you will see, each year the chart grows and with that the expectation that each previous year's formulas are added to new concepts that will be tested on for that year's test. As a teacher, I've found that the students are not spending enough time using the chart and therefore don't value using it during the actual test. If you're in middle school, take a look at the high school chart. When you get to high school, please know that you'll be expected to know all middle school TAKS Math concepts from the 8th grade chart, which take care of 3rd-8th Math concepts.

My suggestion, by way of another teacher: Make sure you have at least the prime numbers memorized up to 30 and definitely know the difference between a number that can only be factored by itself and one and a number that can be factored by more than itself and one.
